What is the difference between

a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

A Registered Dietitian’s credential “RD” is a legally protected title that can only be used by practitioners who are authorized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).  A Registered Dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who has met professional and academic requirements such as: obtaining a bachelor’s degree, completing an accredited supervised practice program, passing a national exam administered by CDR, and regularly completes continuing professional education credits to maintain registration.

In Delaware, it is now required for Registered Dietitians to also be Licensed with the state as a Dietitian/Nutritionist to prevent individuals who call themselves “Nutritionists”, or those that assess and counsel individuals regarding their diet and nutrition without the RD credential from doing so legally without violating the licensure bill.  In other states without this licensure requirement, virtually anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist” regardless of their education and training.  Therefore, you should only trust an RD to give you science-based, credible nutrition advice, as RD’s are the true food and nutrition experts.
